[No Longer Undergraduate] Style

This post is about a week in the making, but life got crazy--as it tends to do--so it's just getting to you now.

It's been pretty quiet around Undergraduate Style, and here's why:

Above are a few "senior photos" my friend Amie did, a photo with a few of my OPA sisters from the day we walked down the Hill for KU's Commencement ceremony, plus a photo of my cap, which I decorated myself and am insanely proud of.

What with graduating, finals, my end-of-year RA duties, and finally moving back home, I've been pretty busy lately. I'm also looking and interviewing for jobs, so that's been my first priority. However, I want to drop in and let you know what this blog will look like over the next couple months.

Obviously--the name Undergraduate Style doesn't really fit anymore. When I started this blog almost three (!) years ago, I honestly didn't think I would keep blogging this long. I figured once I graduated, I'd decide if I would bring the blog to a close or keep going. So, after a lot of thought, I've decided to continue on with the blog, pending a big rebrand. I am still thinking and working out the details of my rebrand, but it's coming. Another big step in continuing this blog will be purchasing a new camera to replace my old one that, as I mentioned a few weeks ago, met its end in a tragic accident.

All this to say--as I continue ironing out those details and shopping for a camera, it will continue to be rather quiet. My goal is to post once a week in addition to Blogging Besties until I re-launch my new site. I anticipate being slightly more active on Instagram than on the blog, so if you don't already, follow me at @undergraduatestyle. If you encounter glitches on the website as I redesign, please be patient!

Thanks for your loyal readership and for bearing with me into this exciting new chapter!

Blogging Besties: Knits

Image (18)
Blogging Besties is a weekly series featuring Whitney of Whitney à la mode, Alex of Undergraduate Style, Maricel of ::My Closet Catalogue:: and Selah of A Bibliophile’s Style. Each week, one of the bloggers will choose one component from the previous week’s outfit to pass on in a brand new look. This “take one, pass it on” challenge is an inspiration to stretch your closet and your imagination!
Last week, Alex looked utterly adorbs in one of my favorite ensembles of hers to date:
So this week is brought to you by: “monochromatic, knits, skater skirt, or tortoiseshell jewelry". And for your viewing pleasure, I give you: a knit.
Image (21)
Yes, my friends, I knit that!
Here is proof positive that I didn't just abandon my regular blogging activities to loll about with slothful abandon. I am doing productive things with my finite spare time. Not only have I rediscovered reading again (currently have 30 books checked out from the library), but I also pulled out ye ol' knitting paraphernalia and whipped up this bad boy in a week.
The knitting obsession was reborn partly due to a paucity of 40s inspired knits. I was looking for a specific length and sleeve style and neckline and I couldn't find anything on eBay or Poshmark that suited my fancy. In frustration, I turned to Ravelry and queued up over thirty knitting patterns that worked for me.
And because we'd experienced a brief cold spell when this all went down, this was the first project I attempted.
Image (20)
It's 50% wool/50% alpaca, but the design is more apropos for warm weather, and although seemingly contradictory, I made this choice on purpose. It means the piece is warm enough for So.Cal cold spells (especially if I layer; imagine this over a fun long-sleeved button down top!) but cool enough to do double duty on milder spring days (hence the short sleeves and boat neckline).
Since it was decidedly warm on the day of my photo shoot, you see it styled here with a flirty trumpet-esque skirt and Mary Janes sans stockings.
For Selah’s turn next week, I challenge her to the following: something red, something striped, something contradictory, or a handmade item.
Vive le vendredi!

Skirt – Banana Republic via eBay
Heels - Marimba by Aerosoles

Blogging Besties: Preppy

Blogging Besties is a weekly series featuring Whitney of Whitney à la mode, Alex of Undergraduate Style, Maricel of ::My Closet Catelogue:: and Selah of A Bibliophile's Style.  Each week, one of the bloggers will choose one component from the previous week's outfit to pass on in a brand new look.  This "take one, pass it on" challenge is an inspiration to stretch your closet and your imagination!

Last week, Whitney wore a trendy all-white outfit! I chose to pass on the "preppy" element from her look. I went with a monochromatic theme, pairing a mint sweater with a teal skirt, layering a crisp white button-down and tights underneath for warmth as it was a rather chilly spring day!

For next week, Maricel can pass on one of the following elements: monochromatic, knits, skater skirt, or tortoiseshell jewelry.

Sweater: Target (similarsimilarsimilar)
Shirt: Ralph Lauren Polo (similarsimilarsimilar)
Skirt: Old Navy (similarsimilar)
Flats: thrifted via Clothes Mentor (Tory Burch versionsimilar)

Blogging Besties: Rhyming

Blogging Besties is a weekly series featuring Whitney of Whitney à la mode, Alex of Undergraduate Style, Maricel of ::My Closet Catelogue:: and Selah of A Bibliophile's Style.  Each week, one of the bloggers will choose one component from the previous week's outfit to pass on in a brand new look.  This "take one, pass it on" challenge is an inspiration to stretch your closet and your imagination!

Last week, Selah looked beautiful in an outfit perfect for spring!  She gave me these prompts from which to work: asymmetrical hem, pearls, coral, floral or a rhyming outfit.

I love a good closet challenge so I knew immediately that I wanted to create a rhyming outfit.  This is easier said than done, though.  I walked around for days thinking thoughts like, "Alright, I wear a lot of tassels.  What rhymes with tassels?  Castles!  I don't have any clothes with castles on them.  On to polka dots!  What rhymes with polka dots?"  This went on and on until I finally found my rhyming ensemble!

Lovelies, I present to you "Striped and Typed!"

Once I had the rhyme, then I had to actually create the outfit.  This was a bit of a challenge because most of my striped items are either tops or dresses and all of my typed pieces are tops.  A girl needs to wear some bottoms!

Alas, I tried the trick of wearing a top over a dress to create a top + skirt effect.  Oftentimes I find that this doesn't work due to the proportions of the pieces but I lucked out this time!

I feel that the vibe of this outfit is very preppy in an "I summer in the Hamptons and play lots of tennis" kind of a way.  I have no actual basis for this opinion given I've never summered in the Hamptons but I felt very posh all day.  Ha!

Alright Alex, here are your prompts for next week: striped, typed, a top over a dress, Chucks or preppy!

What I'm Wearing:
Sweatshirt: Banana Republic (similar, similar)
Dress: Old Navy (similar, similar)
Converse: DSW (exact)

April Budget

Hello! April is over, which means it's time to recap my April budget! This month was another one of those months where, since I bought so many things in March, I planned to use my budget on one bigger thing that I've wanted for a while--white Chucks! I also picked up a few summer tanks on the cheap with the leftovers. Here's what I bought:

Chuck Taylor sneakers | Converse | $50 Obviously white Chucks are a classic, and although I thought I couldn't pull them off, seeing how Whitney styles them in a more mature way (as opposed to how I see most college students wearing them) convinced me that they were worthwhile! I've worn them several times already and although I am still breaking them in, I think they will be a staple for me moving forward!

Jersey tanks | H&M | $10 each I am always on the lookout for flowy printed tanks. They are great with shorts or skirts on their own in the summer, but can easily be layered with cardigans, jackets, and scarves in cooler weather. The subtle, neutral prints on these tanks make them so versatile, I couldn't resist buying two!

Starting budget: $75
Amount spent: $70

The Interview Outfit

Today's outfit is what I've deemed my "interview outfit," because I've worn it to nearly every job interview I've had this year. I have other things I could wear, but I feel like a winner in it, which makes me feel great going into interviews! When I'm actually going to an interview, I wear more conservative shoes and no necklace, but this is the fun version of the outfit I always envision in my head!

Since I love this outfit so much, it was a no-brainer to include in my photo shoot with my photographer friend, James Hoyt! It was a pretty windy day when we were shooting, so we got some pretty funny outtakes, one of which I included in the end.

Blogging Besties: Midi Skirt

The Blogging Besties series is the brain child of Alex @ Undergraduate Style and Whitney @ Whitney à la Mode. In 2015 the series expanded to include Maricel @ My Closet Catelogue and me, Selah @ A Bibliophile's Style. It's based on the idea of "take one, pass it on," but we're passing on an element from another blogger's outfit. It's a fun challenge that inspires us to be creative!

Last week, Maricel was bright and sunny in her spring pastels:

The prompts she gave me were "a midi skirt, yellow, comfy shoes, or a splurge item."
The timing was perfect as I am currently pulling my summer items out of storage, including this coral skirt. The shortest part hits me just below the knee and the longer portions make it a true midi skirt.
I paired my asymmetrical skirt with a floral blouse, pearls, and nude sandals.

Whitney's prompts are: asymmetrical hem, pearls, coral, floral, or a rhyming outfit (lol).
